When we talk about Porto and Norte, people normally think about metropolis, museums, shopping centres, special venues, luxurius restaurants. But it’s difficult to imagine that Porto and the Norte region hide excellent natural places like Vila Nova de Gaia, Matosinhos, Póvoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde and Canidelo.
Tourists can also find different kind of beaches in Porto and along the Norte coast. These can be crowded, isolated, wavy, being the surfers’ favourite. However, the range of beaches do not stop there, you can also find calm waters, nude, wild beaches and if you like to explore chances are that you might come across natural pool beaches.

In addition to those mentioned before you can also enjoy a beautiful sunny day at Praia do Britomar located in Vila Nova de Gaia or Praia Azul in Vila do Conde. These beaches are very accessible from Porto should you be staying there.
Another excellent beach is Agudela in Matosinhos. Located not far from Matosinhos and heading up north, you can find Praia da Fragosa o Da Lada which is located in Póvoa de Varzim. This is a half an hour journey taking the A28 from Matosinhos. Once in Matosinhos you can go to Praia Redonda and experience white sand and a relaxing environment.
If you want to go for something peaceful and relaxing far from the big cities you should drive along the coast line. Heading North and not far from the Spanish border, you will find Afife. Afife is an open beach with white sands and a beautiful landscape. Afife is a perfect point for photographers or those who like to enjoy a beautiful sunset. Going further north you can find Gelfa and finally Vila Praia de Ancora which is a colourful and traditional village with excellent food and Portuguese Architecture.
