No trip to Porto e Norte would be complete without a good round of golf. Estela Golf Course situated near a lively summer resort, Póvoa de Varzim, and only 30 minutes from Oporto was designed by the Portuguese architect Duarte Sottomayor, follows the Scottish tradition, but with one difference: Bermuda grass.
Built over three kilometres of beautiful dunes on the Costa Verde, it provides breathtaking views over the Atlantic and two shimmering lakes contribute to the splendour of the course, which can become quite challenging when the gusty Atlantic breeze is blowing. Despite being one of the newest golf courses, it has already hosted two events in the European Professionals' Circuit. In 1990 the Atlântico/Vinho Verde Cup was won by the Scot Stephen McAllister, and in 1991 it hosted the Portuguese Open, in which the Briton Steven Richardson triumphed. More recently it was also chosen for the European International Amateur Championships.

If one tradition is your golfing preference, then a tee off at Oporto G.C is an absolute must-do. This course is located 17 kilometers to the south of Oporto beside the beautiful beaches of Espinho. And after Pan in France, it is the second oldest golf course in Continental Europe. Established in 1890, when British residents in Porto created the club, its narrow fairways, are the main obstacles, starting out with a difficult Par 4. And in terms of challenging holes, one cannot forget number 11, a Par 5 of 494 meters, which together with hole number 4, is considered to be the most difficult on the course.
If you want to improve your game or perhaps take it up for the first time there are many golf academies all over Porto e Norte. The Miramar Golf Academy in Porto itself come highly recommended as does Quinta do Fojo Golf Academy.
