For the train enthusiast they are many wonderful and varied excursions in Northern Portugal and the rail network is very well connected making it easy to see all the treats that the region has to offer. One particular trip from Porto is a must-see for the railway fans. Starting at São Bento station, a treat in itself because of its fine mosaics, take the slow train up the Douro valley and change at Livração for the one-coach train to Amarante up a steep and scenic branch line. Laze here for a while and soak up the atmosphere. Enjoy a lunch at one of the cafes or eat a picnic whilst you look across at the river Tâmega from striking arched bridge, Ponte São Gonçalo. It is said to have helped local heroes fend off a French attack in the early 19th century.
It is also worth a trip on the train from Oporto to Coimbra, in central Portugal, the countries historic University city. The journey is 75 miles south of Porto and takes an hour or so but it passes through the picturesque town of Aveiro, which is also well worth a visit. However, the highlight of the rail journey is seeing Porto and its river crossings close up. The journey starts at São Bento station and emerges into daylight at a high level above the River Douro, which lies to the right. From the train there are striking views of the cities bridges including the now defunct Dona Maria Pia railway bridge, the impressive D. Luís road bridge and the slender S. João crossing.
