Where to begin? This area is covered with excellent possibilities for walks. Montesinho, Alvão and Douro International Parks all offer very good hill walking, but be sure to keep a bathing costume handy, as there are many rivers and streams for you to dip into when your legs get heavy.
True hikers should head to the Peneda-Gerês National Park - a stunningly beautiful wilderness of rugged boulder strewn mountains interspersed with the bright purple and yellow of heathers and gorses. The National Park covers a massive 70,000 hectares crossing over into Spain where is links into the Baixa Limia-Serra do Xures Natural Park. The mountains reach 700-1500 metres in altitude and are striking with their rounded granite rocks that are littered all over the landscape.

For an easier walk, try The North Coast Natural Park in the far northwest coast around Esposende. Here the sand dunes and cliffs are able to support a range of wildlife with relatively little disturbance. Walking through the dunes has been made easy by wooden boardwalks in specific areas which also protect the dunes’ fragile wildlife.
Alternatively take a relaxing stroll and experience wonderful natural landscapes on the Minho paths near the Spanish border. You’ll discover the local dolmens, Roman remains, wild horses and birds of prey…
