Climate

Porto has a mediterranean climate, although its influenced by a cooler breeze from the Atlantic which make it distinguishably cooler than other Mediterranean cities. That said it still reaches but 40ºC during the peak of the Summer, especially in August.

The mountainous north east sees the greatest seasonal variations as the mountainous areas are snow covered in winter. It occurs most in the Serra da Estrela mountains, where we find the highest point in mainland Portugal (1,991 m) and where it is sometimes possible to ski (although the temperatures are still mild when compared to the rest of Europe).

This special climate brings the best out of the Porto wine-growing upper Douro!
