Undoubtedly this city is most famous for its lodges, locally known as "caves", where the world famous Port wine is stored and aged. This city is located in the Porto district on the southern bank of the River Douro. Though a lovely place to visit in itself, one cannot go there without visiting one of the lodges that has made it so famous.

It is a very old city, existing in the time of the Roman Empire under the name of Cale, so there are a few historical sites to enjoy as well. The monastery of Serra do Pilar is one such site and is a place where views of the city and surrounding landscape can be enjoyed.

There are also a large number of Blue Flag beach’s, fresh water beaches, in and around Vila Nova de Gaia where visitors an either participate in various water sports on offer or simply dip their feet to cool down after a long day of exploring.
