Lamego

Lamego

in

Lamego is overlooked by the beautiful baroque shrine of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which sits 600 metres above the town. The purpose of her presence is to respond to the cries and afflictions of distressed worshippers who call on her by granting them some sort of solace or help.

The city is infused with baroque architecture throughout and has a rich history, thus beholding an incredibly old and enchanting aura. As it sits in such close proximity to the banks of the Douro River it means it benefits from the sublime views of the undulating hills and valleys that surround this entire region, ensuring there are plenty of walks and tours on offer. In the 18th century the city produced some of the wine famous in the region that would later become known as Port, and continues to do so. No visit to this region is complete without trying some.

It may have been founded as early as the 7th century and was initially under the control of the Visigoths, before it was captured by the Moors. Following this Christian rule reigned supreme before the Muslims reconquered it. Finally it came under Portuguese rule when it was captured in 1057 by Ferdinand I, the great grandfather of Afonso Henriques, who was the first king of Portugal. The result of so much turmoil and power struggle is the beautiful medieval and religious architecture that is dotted around the city, as the Christians did much to cement their hold over the town by erecting buildings and monuments.

Every year the shrine of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is paid homage to with a festival that is an honour and a delight for any visitor to witness. Its 18th century Episcopal palace is the now the site for the town’s museum and the Church of the Convent of Santa Cruz is worth visiting.
